Football Season Has Begun...

by Lisa

YES!! I absolutely LOVE football!! (Which I’m sure you’ve already guessed!) My Chiefs are doing fabulous!! They won again on Sunday, which means they are starting with a 3-0 season. This is the first time since 2003 that they’ve been able to start their season so well. I’m so happy to see them heading into a great season again. It’s been so long....

I have watched football since I was a kid, well at least for as long as I can remember. My dad always told me he wanted me to grow up to be a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader. (Sorry dad....Didn’t even become a high school cheerleader. Although I was in the pep club. :0) Does that count?) Of course, over the years my team affiliations have changed. I think it’s because I grew up and realized there were more teams in the NFL than the Dallas Cowboys and the Denver Broncos! Lol!!

My all time favorite NFL player is Jerry Rice. He has to be one of the best football players out there.

(Not to mention the fact that he has one of the most attractive backsides ever to grace a football field! Oh, didn’t I tell you? I also LOVE Football Butt!! Why do you think I joined the pep club? Because the pep club sat right behind “The Wall”. That was the line of players standing on the sidelines waiting for their turn to play. Football Butt heaven in high school.)

But I digress.... In addition to his amazing abilities on the field, he is an amazing person, OFF the field. His life story is one of triumph over tragedy time and time again. His work ethic and classiness is something every player in the NFL should strive for.

Needless to say, because of him, I was a San Francisco 49ers fan for quite a while. (I quit watching them when they got rid of Jerry. I was really mad! I have started to, at least, keep track of whether or not they win again, recently though.) I had a brief stint as an Oakland Raiders fan, too, when they picked up Jerry Rice from the 49ers. But I assure you, that was ONLY because of Jerry!! (I say that to poke fun at my hubby.... He’s a die hard Raiders fan, and has been since he was a kid.)

I was a fan of the Cowboys and Broncos when I was fairly young, mostly because those were the teams my dad liked, and they were the only ones we could watch regularly on t.v. around here. I liked the Redskins for a while, too. Not exactly sure why. I think they just had some pretty good players and were fun to watch there for a while.

About 15, or so, years ago I started really watching the Kansas City Chiefs, and fell in love with the team. They had some amazing players, and it was a lot of fun to watch them play. They actually weren’t really even winning that many games, at the time, but they sure were fun to watch. They had a couple of really good players that the other teams just bounced off of when they ran through. It seemed that almost every game had some sort of unusual or trick play that created all sorts of excitement for the crowd. Of course, I didn’t realize it at the time, but my love of the Chiefs would become a MAJOR household rivalry.

Since my husband is such a die hard Raiders fan, he pretty much hates all the other teams in the same division on principle alone. (If a team in the same division does better than the Raiders, they go to playoffs, and the Raiders stay home.) Which means, since they’re in the same division, Kansas City is on his hate list. The Chiefs/Raiders rivalry goes WAY back in football history, so I did a major no no by choosing to root for them. He’s been trying to talk me out of liking them since I picked them all those years ago.

(It’s the funniest thing, thinking about this die hard Raider fan going into a store to buy Chiefs gear!! I know we get all sorts of funny looks and comments when we go somewhere together in our rival team gear. I can only imagine the looks and comments HE gets when he’s out buying something for me!)

It gets a little interesting around here on Sundays when our teams play each other. I think our friends come over more to watch us talk smack to each other, than they do to watch the game!

When my husbands parents moved to California, we started going to Raider/Chiefs game whenever we could. I think we’ve only missed 2 games in the past 13 years. We ended up getting season tickets to the Raiders just so that we could get really good seats to watch those games. He won’t let me root for my team, though. We sit right behind the black hole, which is full of die hard Raiders fans who tend to take it a little too personally when there’s a traitor in their midst. LOL! I am usually dressed in black, but have well hidden, defiant flashes of red. I have also discovered that “Whoo” sounds just like “Boo”, so I can cheer as loudly as I want when my team does something really good!

A bunch of us get together every Sunday and on Monday nights once football starts, and it’s football all day long. We record all the games everyone wants to watch, and watch them one after another until we’re all footballed out. Somewhere in there, we find time to visit with each other to catch up on our week and to eat some, usually amazing, food. So you’ll definitely be getting football updates every week! ...Although, the Chiefs have got a bye next week, so you’ll probably get reprieve from my football mania next week. :0)

3-0!! 1 of the 2 remaining undefeated teams in the league!! Go Chiefs!!

Until next time....

Lisa
