My Favorite Hooks are
Boye Crochet Hooks

So why do I use Boye crochet hooks?
- They are an easy and comfortable crochet hook for me to hold.
- They are more pointed at the hook and tip than most other brands of crochet hook. That makes them easier to get into tighter crochet, and easier to grab your yarn over thread. (See image below)
- They are smooth and slide easily with different types and weights of yarns and fibers.
- They are made of aluminum, and can handle years of use. (even a little abuse!...oops!) It takes quite a bit to really damage them.
- The smaller hook sizes are made of stainless steel, which makes the hooks very strong.
- They are easy to wash and keep clean. They don’t soak up the oils from your hands.
- The paint doesn’t wear off as quickly as some other brands. (I have some that are older than I am and still look like new!)
- They have been around for years, and are not likely to get discontinued.
- They come in all sorts of sizes and different colors. (What can I say? I like having a little color in my life!)
Smaller crochet hooks are used for smaller gauge yarns, cottons, and threads. Mostly for lace work like edgings, doilies, and thread crochet. But they are used for any of your more delicate fiber crochet work. The Boye crochet hooks have much stronger hooks than some of the other brands I’ve used. I’ve actually had hooks break on me while in the middle of a project!! Once I started using Boye hooks, that hasn’t happened to me again.
Stainless steel Boye crochet hooks

I really like the way Boye hooks fit in my hand. I have rather small hands, and some of the other hooks I’ve tried just aren’t as comfortable to hold. The way I hold my crochet hook also determines which type I like. The thumb pad is just perfect for me to pinch comfortably between my thumb and forefinger, and still have tons of control. I have tried some of those “ergonomic” hooks, and I just don’t like the way they feel in my hand. Boye hooks are the best crochet hooks for me.
Here is an up close picture of the business end
of a couple of Boye crochet hooks.

See how the red hook shows that the tip tapers into a nice point? That makes it very easy to push it gently into your next row of stitching without separating your fibers. The blue hook shows how it not only tapers to a tip at the top, but also tapers nicely at the hook. It gives you a little larger hooking area. That makes it much easier to grab your yarn over thread as you crochet along.
This picture shows the comparison between Boye crochet hooks
and Susan Bates crochet hooks.

See how the red Boye hook is a little more tapered at the tip? It is also much more tapered at the hook. Susan Bates crochet hooks are much more squared in their hook shape and tip appearance.
Most other brands are more squared, as well. This creates a much shorter hook end for grabbing your yarn over thread. Which can cause dropping and splitting. Since their tips are as wide as their bodies, you sometimes have to really work at getting them into the next row of stitching. This can also cause splitting of your fibers. Split fibers lead to sloppy looking crochet.
No other brand that I know of, has both the tapered tip and the tapered hook end like Boye.
Believe it or not, that small detail makes a HUGE difference!! When I was first learning, I pretty much just used whatever hook I was given, or whichever one I could find cheaper. I could never figure out why sometimes I had a lot of problems with splitting fibers and dropping my yarn over threads.
Then it hit me!!
Hmmm....seems like when I use my Boye crochet hooks, I have less problems...
That little light in my head went off and started blinking!!
Ta da!!
In my opinion, Boye crochet hooks are the best crochet hooks on the market, right now. I very seldom use anything else. They may be a little bit more expensive than some other brands, but they are definitely worth it!!
