Crochet Shawl Pattern:

You will need:

1 skein favorite yarn

Hook size of choice

Tapestry needle

Foundation Row:

You will need to decide what size you would like your “lace” to be. For lace openings that are about an inch, you will want to do chain 5 sections. For larger, you can do chain 7 or 9 sections. For smaller you can go with chain 3 sections. Just make sure you always choose an odd number. It looks better. Chain width you would like in multiples of your desired lace size. (3, 5, 7, 9, etc...) For a nice sized shawl, you will want the foundation chain to lay loosely from your wrist, around neck, to other wrist.

For the rest of this pattern, I will use a chain 5 example. Alter the pattern according to your lace size choice.

Row 1:

Sl st in last ch. Ch 5. Sk next 3 chs, sc in next chain. *Skip 4 chs, sc in next chain.* Rep from * to * across. Sc in last ch.

Row 2 on:

Sl st in next 3 stitches of last ch. *Ch 5. Sc in 3rd stitch (center stitch) of ch 5 loop.* Rep from * to * across. You will have one less ch 5 loop in each row. Continue repeating row 2 until you attach your last ch 5 loop with sc. Finish off, weave in ends.

Note: If you do not want your ch 5 loops “locked”, you can sc around the entire ch 5 loop, rather than in the middle stitch.

Options:

You can sew on beads or sequins, attach buttons, fringe etc.... Try different fun yarns. Some of the furry and fuzzy yarns work great with this pattern. Go crazy! Make this chain stitch lace pattern your own!

Here’s a pic of a belly dancing hip scarf I made using this method. It is a little bit different since I used a single crochet row to use as a tie. The single crochet lace pattern is only used in the center portion. I attached some bead work to the edge and top to give it some sparkle.

Belly Dance Hip Scarf

This hip scarf, or wrap, isn’t just for belly dancing! You could crochet one up, embellish it with beads (or not), and use it for a swim suit cover up. They look great tied to the side. Simply add a single crochet tie each end. (Chain stitch tie to desired length, then single crochet back. You can run the single crochet all the way across to the other side.)

Use this crochet shawl pattern to create your own perfect gift. A chain stitch lace shawl like this makes a great spring or fall gift. It gives just enough warmth for those cooler evenings, without being too hot. It’s really great for someone who spent too much time in the sun and needs to ward off those sunburn chills!!
