Jewelry Making
Components
What’s the Difference Between:
Components
and
Findings?
Jewelry making components are the large essential portions of your jewelry. The parts that, without them, you could not create anything truly beautiful. Findings are all the little stuff, all the little piecey parts. (Jump rings, ear wires, clasps, head pins, etc.) These things make your job easier, and as a whole, the findings become a component of your jewelry making.
So what components would you need for a project then?
Jewelry Making Components
for a Necklace
Let’s say you are making a beaded necklace. What would you need to be able to do that?
Here’s a list of what I would use to make a necklace of that type:
Assembly Instructions
I would start this necklace by attaching a solid ring to the wire with crimp beads. That would create a stop for my beads. I would then string all my beads onto my wire. See Making Beaded Jewelry
Note: If I were putting on a pendant or charm, I would either string it on half way through stringing my beads, or use jump rings to attach it at the end, depending on the type of pendant or charm. See Making Your Own Charms
After all my beads were in place, I would attach the clasp to the other end of the wire with some more crimp beads.
I would then cover all my crimp beads with crimp bead covers, and attach my pendant or charm if it were the jump ring type.
Finally, if I were adding a drop, I would add jump rings, or even a short piece of chain to the solid ring (using jump rings) and add the drop. The necklace would be finished.
Necklace Making Components
So the jewelry making components for creating a beaded necklace would be:
the wire, the beads, the pendant or charm, and the findings.
Bracelet Making Components
The components for creating a beaded bracelet would be the same as for a necklace, only you wouldn’t need as much wire, or as many beads.
the wire, the beads, the pendant or charm, and the findings.
Earring Making Components
The components for creating a set of earrings would be:
Ear wires (or posts, threads, etc..), beads or charms, and the findings.
Depending on what type of piece you are making, the jewelry making components will change a little. If you do an internet search for jewelry findings, you will likely find some of the components mixed in, but if you do a search for components, you may not find all different kinds of findings available to you.
