Lazy Daisy Stitches
for Hand Embroidery
The lazy daisy stitch is similar to the chain stitch. Instead of a row of interlocking chains, it is single tacked circles. It is used mostly to create flower petals and leaves in hand embroidery.
Knot your thread. Insert your needle from behind at the point where you want the bottom of your first loop. Pull tight. Insert your needle back into the same place you came up in. Make sure to leave a loop of thread on the top of your work the approximate size you want the finished loop to be.
Insert your needle, from behind, into the point where you want the top of the loop to stay. Make sure your needle is inside the loop. Take your needle to the outside of the loop, and pull gently to tighten up the loose loop.
Insert your needle back into the same place you just came up.
Make sure your loop is secured within the tack stitch. Pull stitch snugly, but not too tightly.
You want to keep the center of your loop open. Continue creating your tacked loops anywhere you would like them. Bring the working thread to the back of your work.
Tie off. Once again, this is a stitch where practice makes perfect. The more you practice, the more uniform your finished stitches will be.
You can alternate large and small loops for a different effect. You could also make some larger lazy daisy stitches then place some smaller ones in a contrasting or complimentary color off setting or overlapping the larger ones. This would create an entirely different effect.
