My mom had a Viking sewing machine, years ago...and I do mean years. I think that machine is now going on something like 30 or 35. (It may even be older than that!!) This thing is a TANK. It doesn’t have a ton of fancy stitches on it, but it gets the job done. And it gets it done, well.
I have now permanently borrowed it. It is one of the best machines I have ever used. Everyone else I talk to is always saying how their machines are broken, or not working right, or are constantly in the shop. This thing has plugged along for years, without any hitches. An occasional tune up and oil is all it has needed. (Knock on wood!) I use it for almost all of my basic sewing.
(I even used it to sew up the canvas shell for my booth. Check it out on my About Me page.)
When I was in the market for an embroidery machine, the first one I looked at was the Viking Embroidery Machine. The price scared the crap out of me!! I started looking at all the different machines out there. I did lots of research into the different brands, models, features, prices, etc... I discovered the design size limitations on the cheaper models, and found that most of the other brands that offered the same type of options were just about as expensive. I was drawn back to the Viking embroidery machine. Mainly due to the longevity and durability mom’s Viking machine had already proven.
I finally convinced my husband that I hadn’t lost my mind and that it was a really good idea to spend that kind of money on a sewing machine.
(I promised him I would make embroidered gifts for every occasion, and we’d never have to buy gifts again.)
Not really believing me, he still bought it for me for Christmas.
(That’s why I love him! He’s so good to me.)
I absolutely loved it!
I made everyone I knew machine embroidered towels for every birthday, Christmas and every other gift giving occasion that came up.
Some embroidered towel sets I made
I started collecting different sizes and styles of hoops, different types of presser feet, needles, stabilizers, and tons upon tons of designs. I joined design clubs and embroidery support groups for other addicts, much like myself, and learned my new Designer II Viking Embroidery Machine could do much more than I ever knew!
I was on a first name basis with the ladies at the Viking dealer because of my constant shopping to feed my new addiction. Any new gadget or cool new tool, class or sale, they would actually call me to make sure I knew about it!
I decided to open a business and sell some of my embroidered projects. (My habit was getting pretty expensive. Had to support it somehow...) My machine was having some alignment problems and I took it in to get serviced. That’s when they told me of their great sale.
(I guarantee my husband wishes I hadn’t gone in, that day. Little does he know, they would have called me anyway!!)
With my new business, I had gotten a couple of large orders. How great would it be to be able to get them done twice as fast? Really great!
Next thing I know, I’m walking out of the store with a brand new Designer SE Viking Embroidery Machine!! Thanks to the sale, it was about the same cost as the Designer II I had gotten a couple of years earlier, and had a TON more features.
I was in Heaven ...
... and have been happily stitching along ever since.
If I were to recommend a machine to anyone, it would be a Viking embroidery machine. Not sure how they do it, but they make an incredible machine. Both sewing and embroidery.
(Oh, and from what I hear, they make a pretty good surger, too. At least that’s what my friend tells me.)
As a side note, their customer service isn’t the greatest. From what I’ve personally experienced, and what I’ve heard, but they do eventually come through. I have to say, though, the quality of their machines is unsurpassed, in my book! I don’t think I would ever buy anything else.
I’ve got my eye on their new Designer Diamond....
But don’t tell my husband, K?
I need to prepare him first!!
